New Mexico AHEC Area Health Education Centers
The National Network of Area Health Education Centers(AHECs) provide priority workforce development and community health support services to underserved populations, primary care, and primary care support disciplines. AHEC connects students to health careers, connects health professional to communities, and connects communities to better health.
The New Mexico Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) include the Program Office at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, the Montañas del Norte AHEC (affiliated with Luna Community College) in Las Vegas, and Southern AHEC (affiliated with New Mexico State University) in Las Cruces. In addition, many established community partnerships with public educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and professional organizations are critical to our success.
Demand for Health Professionals
There are not enough health care professionals in the state of New Mexico to meet the population’s need for health care services. The demand for health care workers and providers is much greater than the supply of graduates. The state ranks at the bottom in terms of the number of dentists, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, nurse aids, psychologist, and other health care workers. This means that there are more jobs than there are health professionals to fill them! Being a health care professional opens doors of opportunities that will help you find employment, a good salary, and a sense of satisfaction that comes from helping others improve their quality of life. Best of all, as a health professional, you will have the chance to serve and give back to your respective communities!
